This Mahler Ninth, heard in the superb acoustics of the Tobin Center, stands as one of Lang-Lessing’s and the orchestra’s finest moments. Holst's music was informed early on by the late Romantics, and traces of Johannes Brahms can be plainly heard in the Walt Whitman Overture, which Holst composed at college when he. Lang-Lessing established his Mahler credentials in his first concert as music director here in 2010 with Mahler’s First Symphony and has conducted Mahler works here several times since. JoAnn Falletta and the Ulster Orchestra present a diverse program of lesser known works by Gustav Holst, the composer of the perennially popular suite The Planets. The San Antonio Symphony had not performed Mahler’s Ninth since May 2001 at the Majestic Theatre, when Christopher Wilkins was music director.
The phrasing by Lang-Lessing effectively expressed the long arcs of melodies and connected vividly echoes that seemed to bounce across the universe. A calm passage led to a final climax and then the music finally faded away like embers in a fireplace. A violin solo floated over a melody from the basses, the high notes wavering far above the low notes. Chordal progressions of deep longing made surprising and satisfying turns and built up tensions that become almost unbearable before backing up and starting over.
The third-movement rondo furnished lush orchestration, often in counterpoint, ending in a trumpet melody.īut, oh, the hymnal, final-movement adagio. The next two movements are reflections on life, the orchestral colors suggesting irony and bitterness in the form of a waltz and a slow trio during the second-movement scherzo. A funeral march and a vision of heaven also arise in the 30-minute opening movement that is marked by cataclysmic climaxes punctuated by otherworldly calm passages overlaid with celestial harp chords.
In the Ninth, imminent death is confronted front and center in the first movement, notably among the cellos that sound out an erratic heartbeat.
